Meredith Prain

Profoundly deaf and fitted with a harness containing two large microphones the size of small, thick coasters, the harness went over my head with the speakers on my chest and strapped at the back, with two speaker wires trailing up to my ears where they were attached to small earpieces that sat in my ears.

Meredith Prain began working with deafblind people in 1995 as a speech pathologist at Able Australia (then The Deafblind Association). She completed her PHD in 2012, investigating interactions between adults born deafblind and their support staff in group homes. Meredith holds a variety of roles in the field of deafblindness. She currently works as National Head of Research and Centre of Excellence – Deafblind at Able Australia, Project Manager at Deafblind Information Australia with SensesWA and as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Meredith is also a board member of Deafblind Australia and Vice President of Deafblind International. As a speech pathologist, she has a strong interest in communication and continues to learn new things about deafblind communication. Meredith is legally blind and enjoys yoga and music.
